“Sometimes all you need are Two Chords and a Groove” from the Road Trip album.
The tunes in Road Trip were all written in 2020 and like the year itself represent a wide range of moods and emotions. “Road Trip” and “Two Chords and a Groove” are jams that evolve over a simple chord structure. The slow synth march “Ghost Town Revisited” is how I was feeling when things slowed down.
Like a road trip, every stop can bring something different. “Bike Ride” is a light optimistic tune based on going outside. I wrote the 2nd half of “Four to Three” as a jazz waltz, and later added the 4/4 intro. The drums are intentionally loose and ambiguous. “Uncertainty” was a dark mood as things dragged – every day seemed to bring a new and disturbing development. “Caffeine” is all about the joy of coffee. Collaborations on this album include “She’s on Her Way” featuring Marji Caral on flute. She always brings something unexpected, this session was no exception.
“Mood Swings” features the versatile Dave Rosky on guitar, actually many guitars. I’ve know Dave a long time, and it was interesting that our 1st recording collaboration was done 100% remotely – as is the new way. He starts out like Wes Montgomery , then rocks out and brings it home.
“Drifting” has a down tempo bossanova-inspired groove and spacey Stratocasters looking for a timeless tranquility. “Civilization Returns” is the end credits theme I created for a film scoring effort. The movie was a futuristic space animation where the heroine succeeds over bleakness and a monstrous foe. Seemed like an appropriate end theme for a 2020 project.
